Beaucastel is an iconic Châteauneuf du Pape producer. Coudoulet is not exactly their second label; it comes from an adjacent plot of land on the other side of the road you drive on to get to the estate. The 2014 vintage was a difficult one due to excessive rain, and the Perrin family reduced the price slightly to reflect the reputation of the vintage, not the quality of their wine. This is lovely! Wine Advocate (Jeb Dunnuck): 89 “The 2014 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône is a Provençal, charming effort that’s loaded with dark berry fruit, bouquet garni, leather, and garrigue aromas and flavors. Rounded, forward and still with mid-palate depth, it’s geared for drinking over the coming 5-6 years. While 2013 and 2014 are no doubt difficult vintages, this is still a brilliant lineup of wines from the Perrin Family. When speaking about 2014, Marc Perrin commented that there was a lot of mildew pressure, and they had to work extremely hard in the vineyard. Yields were down 40% due to dropped fruit, and I think their commitment to quality shows in the wines.”
